BMW V8 Oil Consumption Issues

So you have oil consumption problems in your BMW’s V-8 engine. Oil consumption is a problem with both the N62 and N63 generation of V-8 engines.  Let’s take this step-by-step and narrow the possible causes:

First, are you seeing oil under the car? This would be an oil leak, not oil consumption. Generally speaking this is a simpler problem to address. There are lots of places where oil can leak so the challenge here is to determine the source of the leak. Once we know where the oil is coming from we can replace seals and gaskets and stop the leak.

Now if you‘re seeing oil coming from the back of the car, specifically out the tailpipe, this would be oil consumption. Oil is getting into the combustion chamber, is being burned, and the burned oil is passing through the catalytic converter and out the tailpipe. Oil consumption can be caused by two primary faults: Either the crankcase ventilation system is malfunctioning causing abnormally high crankcase vacuum, or the piston rings or valve stem seals are leaking oil into the combustion chambers. Crankcase ventilation issues are fairly easy to resolve. If there are no crankcase ventilation issues, then additional testing will be required.

The more likely culprit is the valve stem seals. Normally valve stem seals will last the life of the vehicle. BMW has a design problem and the valve stem seals fail prematurely. Valve stem seals can be replaced and because they are leaking does NOT mean you should sell the car. We have the special tools and expertise required to make this repair and have successfully repaired many of the V-8 engines. This is an expensive repair but if your car is otherwise in good shape, it makes sense to replace the valve stem seals.
